Ken Atchity, movie producer, book publisher, book reviewer for The Los Angeles Times, and Vice President of PEN, introduced the conference with his talk, "The State of Storytelling at the Present Time". He was also the guest speaker at the gala dinner.
Some sessions featured how to sharpen fiction writing, for example, Louise Phillips whose psychological crime thrillers books were shortlisted for Best Irish Crime Novel of the Year. Other sessions allowed well known names such as Conor Kostick, Ben Galley, Debbie Young of ALLi, and last but not least, Laurence O'Bryan to assist with their expertise in self publishing including marketing. In the background, Miriam from Books Go Social conducted interviews on video with writers from all over the world.
Equally valuable times were occasions when participants were able to interact with other writers. Writing is a solitary activity, and this opportunity to talk shop was not to be missed.
I stayed at Trinity College, a place of academic excellence, and was witness to the very tight security measures that were necessitated on the day of honorary degree presentations. US Vice President Joe Biden, received an honorary doctorate, his first degree from a university outside the US. In line with Trinity's traditions an oration was given in Latin in honour of Vice President Biden. The University's Chancellor, Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland presided.
My memories of this year's conference will continue to inspire my writing over the next year.
